“Sentiment without action is the ruin of the soul.”
Sunday morning I was up before the sun to bake. I poured myself a cup of tea, turned on the morning news and padded around the kitchen in my pajamas. My hands became sticky with dough as hot oil bubbled on the stove, waiting eagerly for a puffed donut ready for frying.
Sunday morning we hosted brunch to benefit Seattle Tilth. We gathered with community, ate, savored the leisurely pace of a weekend morning, and celebrated the abundance of seasonal, local ingredients while supporting an organization that champions sustainable and local food systems. This was the first of what I hope will become monthly gatherings, featuring food by local cooks and benefitting local organizations.
Edward Abbey said that “sentiment without action is the ruin of the soul.” These brunches are my little way of taking action, serving, and raising awareness. It is my sincere hope that friends and strangers will join me at the table lured by the promise of a delicious brunch and will leave full and happy and more conscious of where our food comes from and how to eat responsibly.
Let me know if you’d like to be added to the email list for future brunches. In the meantime, here’s the menu from this morning, which would make a lovely Christmas morning meal if you ask me. Some of the recipes are originals and some are from other sources. If something sounds particularly good to you let me know and I’ll share the recipe with you.
